How to Stay Healthy on Vacation

The quickest way to spoil a vacation is to come down with an illness or injury while you’re traveling. To avoid mishaps and illness, take measures to stay healthy while you’re on vacation. Keep in mind that you should also stay aware of your existing health concerns, restrictions and diets. Don’t allow your vacation to become a break from being healthy. With these simple tips, it’s easy to have fun and be good to your body at the same time.
Play it Safe
Be cautious when planning activities during your vacation. Be aware of your physical limitations and avoid sports and outdoors activities that are beyond what you normally do. A sprained muscle or injury will put a quick damper on your vacation fun. Use safety equipment appropriately and always check the credentials of anyone you’re renting equipment or services from. Use the buddy system when exploring new areas, and always check in at predetermined times to make sure everyone in your party is accounted for.
Pack Your Medications
Don’t forget your medications when you travel. Make sure you have enough medication for the trip, and consider bringing along copies of your prescriptions just in case. When you’re having fun, it’s easy to forget to take your medications, so keep them somewhere you’ll see them or set an alarm on your watch or phone. Along with the medications you take regularly, pack basic over the counter medications such as antacids, allergy medication and aspirin. Pack sunscreen and bug repellant along with medications, and apply liberally when required.
Be Prepared for Illness
Some illnesses are unavoidable, especially when you’re traveling with individuals with compromised immune systems or with children. When traveling internationally, the CDC recommends knowing how to treat diarrhea and vomiting, including understanding when to seek medical treatment. If you’re traveling to an area where you don’t speak the language, know where to find resources for Americans and learn some basic requests for help.
Kids and adults can experience stress while traveling. Be aware of your responses to stress and do what you can to limit stress while traveling. This may mean booking flights at reasonable times, avoiding over-scheduling your days, and getting plenty of rest at night. Stress can lead to a host of symptoms you want to avoid when you’re trying to have fun, so consider your efforts to limit stress an investment in a great vacation.
Try new foods and be adventurous, but don’t stray too far from your regular diet, especially when it comes to any restrictions you might have regarding allergies, blood pressure management or other health conditions that require a modified diet. Even restaurant and resort foods can be enjoyed in moderation. The same goes for drinking alcohol. Limit yourself and avoid binge drinking. Your body will thank you.
